How to have a Stress-Free Visit

We know bringing your pet into us can be a stressful time for both you and them, even if it’s just for a routine check-up! That’s why Vet Nurse Ciara has put together a helpful guide to reducing stress for your visits.

It includes practical steps you can practice at home, as well as how to minimise stress when preparing to bring them in. Let’s take a look!

At Home

  • Practice Handling - Desensitisation is key! Touch your pet’s ears, nose, and

mouth at home. Open their mouth to check their teeth and reward them with

treats for staying calm. This helps prepare them for routine exams.

  • Noise Desensitisation - The clinic can be noisy! If your pet is sound-sensitive,

play the TV, radio, or noise desensitising videos on YouTube to help them adjust

to new sounds.

  • Socialisation Matters - Expose your pets to other animals and humans early,

especially when they’re puppies or kittens. This builds their confidenc

  • Exercise Before the Visit - A good walk can help dogs burn off energy and feel

more relaxed.

  • Cat Carrier Tips - Leave the carrier out at home and make it inviting with a

blanket and treats. This helps your cat see it as a safe space, not just a “vet visit

box.”

  • Plan for Nervous Pets - If your pet is anxious or reactive around others, call us

before your visit! We can arrange for you to come at a quieter time or wait in

your car until the appointment.

  • Natural Calm Solutions - For extremely nervous pets or those with motion

sickness, talk to us about nutraceuticals like Nutracalm or Inuvet Travel. These

can naturally ease anxiety.

At the Vets

  • Bring Them Hungry - Pack your pet’s favourite treats! We also have treats here to

help make the visit more positive.

  • Happy Visits - Stop by for treats, attention, and a quick weigh-in when your pet

isn’t sick. These positive experiences help them associate the clinic with good

things.

  • Comfort Items - Bring their favourite toy or blanket for added reassurance.

Following these tips, you’ll help make your pet’s vet visits less stressful and more enjoyable. Feel free to reach out with any questions – we’re here to help!
